Mexican Folk Art: Raymundo Gonzalez

Mexican painter Raymundo Gonzalez continues with his work based on common life themes of Mexico. Gonzalez delights in the festive lives of ordinary Mexican people. The Carousel depicts a village fiesta scene, with proportions and perspective slightly skewed, typical of folk art. The figures at the bottom cavort and play, common people. But there are hints of deeper issues. A mermaid on a couch is a fantastic character to have appeared. Holes in the canopy above the carousel give a sense of poverty.

Deep in the background sits the village, with blackened windows watching like eyes from a distance. A mysterious blue night sky sky presides over the whole scene with a deep sense of mystery.

Mexican flags can be seen everywhere, in the foreground and the background.
