Mexican Painter Raymundo Gonzalez: The Bus of Democracy

They call them “Chicken Buses,” in part because you might find yourself sitting next to a chicken. Traditionally these buses were converted American school buses, painted and ornamented with grand style and used to ferry common people around Mexico.
Raymundo Gonzalez has noticed the traditional Mexican Chicken Bus is being replaced by fancier buses, more like American Greyhounds. But he remembers the singular beauty of a decorated Mexican bus.
Buses are a favorite theme for Mexican folk artist Raymundo Gonzalez. In his work “Bus of Democracy” we find a beautiful example of a traditional Mexican bus. Fiesta colors abound, decorating the top of the bus, which is also adorned with blooming flowers. An ominous snake inches along the side of the road, along with a black bird.
Curiously, the bus is not filled with people, but instead with marble busts of important looking characters. Behind the green foliage you can see the dark blue night sky, so prevalent in many of Gonzalez. Paintings.
